Access to Sandia-controlled Kauai Test Facility premises, which is located on the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), are separate concerns. KTF is a tenant range located on the PMRF, which is a Department of Defense (DoD) facility run by the U.S. Navy. Access to PMRF is required before KTF can be accessed. Controlled Articles
Controlled articles such as portable electronic devices, both Government and personally owned, capable of recording information or transmitting data (e.g., audio, video, radio frequency, infrared, and/or data link electronic equipment) are not permitted in Limited Areas (LAs), Protected Areas (PAs), and Material Access Areas (MAAs), without prior approval.
Medically Necessary Devices
Medical necessity for an electronic device is determined by a licensed physician or health care practitioner operating within the scope of their practice. Devices that are considered optional (e.g., peripheral devices that pair with the medically necessary device, but are not themselves medically necessary) or recreational (e.g., heart monitors used for fitness purposes) do not meet the criteria.
Medical devices that are consistent with the definition of a controlled article (i.e., have the ability to record and/or transmit, audio and/or video) are not allowed to operate in or around classified information and therefore are not approved for use in a Sandia Limited Area unless the ability to transmit and/or record can be disabled. Disabling a device could include placing it into “Flight Mode”, “Airplane Mode”, or otherwise turning off all wireless capabilities, or shunting/disabling all microphones.
Prohibited Articles
The following prohibited articles are not permitted into any Sandia-controlled premises or parking lot without prior authorization:
- Explosives
- Firearms
- Weapon/hunting/fixed blade type knives, or any folding knife with a blade length longer than 2.49 inches
- Dangerous weapons, personal chemical protection spray (pepper spray)
- Instruments or material likely to produce substantial injury to persons or damage to persons or property
- Hazardous radiological, chemical, or biological materials
- Radiological substances or chemicals in a form or quantity that would create an event or release a footprint greater than 30m (Note: This does not include radiological sources monitored or controlled under the Material Control and Accountability Program)
- Safety Level 3 and 4 biological materials (Note: BioSafety [BSL] 3 and 4 materials are not approved on the Sandia Authorization Basis)
- Any other item prohibited by law (e.g., illegal drugs and paraphernalia)
